June 20

1983 - Monday - 66° at 6 AM - Cloudy - hazy most of day.  NYC had light rain but none here.
Wes brought dirt down to fill back of cliff wall.  I transplanted two cucumbers from cliff side of garden to join others under the fencing - cultivated and watered garden - watered rhododendron and hemlock on south side - found big stone under one hemlock - We got it out - cut grass.

1984 - Wednesday - 60° at 6:15 - Sunny beautiful - first real "June" day.  Golf 8-9:45.  Showers and off to Essex, Ct., Griswold Inn, for Texaco Retirees Luncheon.  Went via 84 - 66 - 9 South - home via 9 - 95 - 33 - good day.  Had walked around town after luncheon.  Relaxed in evening, inspected grounds - deer didn't come in - he had been on Bog Path and on North near well the day before.

1985 - Thursday - 56° at 6:30 - Cloudy - cleared during day - thunderstorm at 5 pm but no rain here.
To Mass.  Picked up shelf clock and electric bedside clock from Warren Mackin - new hose, bucket and cord clips from Meekes - left film for developing - shopped Deeps.  Home for lunch - nap - I cut grass from rhubarb area 
Wes dug around huge stone along path top of Wood Knoll - too big to move - I dug planting holes along stone steps to Wood Knoll to move Wall Garden plans when thunder drove us in.

1986 - Friday - Leaving day from London - Strand Palace Hotel - leaving for home day.  After breakfast - bus to Knightsbridge - very slow - lots of traffic - Harrods bought a few gifts - Underground to Covent Garden - thru market to Hotel - Checked out.  
to Covent Garden Station for Underground to Heathrow - fast trip
Good lunch - walked about - changed money back to dollars - very little left - BA Flight 179 left 6:30 - good trip - into JFK half hour early - Wes' bag lost - delayed us - had come in on earlier flight - Re's Car Service waited luckily - home at 11 pm.  Wonderful trip

1987 - Saturday - 68° at 6:45.
Electricity off before breakfast - for over 4 hours - prevented our cleaning the house.  Worked outdoors - swept walks - steps - garden room - replanted the miniature rose that wasn't good enough for the show - Wes' hip bothering him - arthritis.
Electricity on at 11:30 - cleaned house - lunch - nap - washed hair - Wes went to Marcus for milk and to check whether they sold ice - for party tomorrow.
Very hot, humid day - worst this season.


June 21

1983 - Tuesday - 60° at 6 AM.  Cloudy - became mostly hazy day.  NYC had rain but none here.  No Mass as Wes book car for 39,400 mile service at 8 o'clock.  He had haircut - went to bank.  I watered rest of big hemlock - put slug bait around Marigolds - Dahlias - badly eaten.  I had a haircut in afternoon.  Deadheaded wall garden plants - Gypsophila finished blooming - To Alex & Helen for dinner at 6 PM - took walk with them after meal - Beautiful sky.

1984 - Thursday - 56° at 6 AM - Sunny - good sleeping.  Beautiful day.  To Mass - left from there for Eileen's in Tarrytown - on to the Zoo - Walked to Bengali Express - Admiring wooded plantings and rocks ride on the Monorail over deer - tigers - elephants - peacocks - rhinoceros - red relative of Panda sleeping in tree - then walked to Cablecar, Safari Way - saw apes - walked and saw Pelicans being fed - went thru bird house - back to Eileen's for lunch at 1:30 - to Alters for bread - shopped at Cross River - Home at 4 pm - Nap - Walk about - Good day.

1985 - Friday - 52° at 6 AM - Beautiful - Summer arrives 6:44 AM.  Did wash.  Wes finished putting back soil into big stone hole on wood Knoll, realigning path to give good planting beds.  I sent to Sylvia Barry's sale - couldn't find anything.  We drove to Tarrytown - bought sandwich at Deli - ate it in car - to Eileen's to pick up 2 Dwarf Streptocarpus - to Alters for bread - to Rosedale, couldn't find a cover that would work over the pool recirculating pump - home - Wes took saw for sharpening - later cut down small beech over Wood Knoll steps - I cut grass - put leaf mulch on rhubarb.

1986 - Saturday - 52° at 6:30 - Beautiful - Home from England - Place looked good - Gizella brought over the mail - Told of Adenophora killed by our "digging animal".  Put suitcases away - I went to Waldbaums.  Wes raised walk path off deck - after Asclepias blooms will raise that section - I cultivated - deadheaded - watered - moved couple lettuce plants to fill gaps - tired and stiff at day's end.  I.R.S. notified agreed with explanation offered for 1983 return - we were right - they were wrong.

1987 - Sunday - 67° at 6 AM - Raining - thunderstorm at 4 AM.  7/10 inch - needed it but prayed for clearing for our party.  To 8'clock Mass.  Prepared house - vegetables (not needed) dip (ditto) bar - moved diningroom table to window - glasses - liquor - for cocktail party.
Early nap after lunch - Diane Lenz (Country Catering) here at 4:30 - Billie Newell, Grace Schaefer, Tracy's, Timpanelli's - Scotts - Hartcorns, Kellers - McKeons - Rosses, Stoddards, Neligans, Father Tighe (Sattlers couldn't come account Mark's back) here 5-8:30 - good party. - Luckily no more rain.
