August 7

1983 - 68° at 6 AM.  Good to see everything wet.  However, it was still hot and humid.  To 8 o'clock Mass. 
Prepared house and luncheon for Coggeshalls and Timpanelli's - here 1 PM to 4:30 - very pleasant day - guests got along well.
We cleaned up - had iced tea on deck - Wes napped.  I picked beans and strawberries. 
We had killed 8 Tomato Horn Worms ugly - ate many leaves and tomatoes. 

1984 - Tuesday - at Asticou Inn - Northeast Harbor, Maine.  Fog and light sprinkles in morning - cleared in afternoon and cooler.  Hearty breakfast at 8 (opening time).  Walked in Asticou Azalea Garden - drove to see Barbara Craighead had at Mt. Desert Campground - toured that by car - on to Hulls Cove Visitor Center, Bar Harbor - to start Loop Road drive thru  Acadia Park - many beautiful sights - enjoyed Wildflower Garden at Sieur de Monts Spring - left Loop road for lunch - Blackwoods at Otter Cliffs - back to see Jordan Pond - Eagle Pond - Cadillac Mtn - [[?phone]] to Stephen Matheo - back to Inn for rest & dinner. 

1985 - Wednesday - 63° at 6 AM - Cloudy - very light shower.  Wes transplanted the second big Eunonymous from shed to side of house/shed path.  I drove to Tarrytown to pick up Bit - back to Ridgefield - walked thru Ballard Garden - lunch at Cafe Naturel - too early for Aldrich Museum - home for nap.   Wes had been taken to lunch at Bella Stalia by Ed [[?Teclan]], Bob Dorsch and Lon Strahl
Bit and I walked about - Wes took nap. 
Drizzle so had cocktail in Solar - Rain at night. 

1986 - Thursday - 70° at 6:30 - Dark - gloomy - Sun, if we were to see it, 5:58 - 8:05.  Wes went to Mass - I prepared for work at Ballard Garden but rain prevented - phoned the ladies.  I went to Ridgefield to leave information on topiaries with Muriel Pedersen - bought gasoline $1.03 for high test - Gran Central Market - talked to Pat Freeman & heard about changes to the house - home for lunch - Wes had worked on wall off dell walk - To Father Tighe's at 5:15 for dinner - Hartcorns there - admired his garden - pleasant evening - Home 11:15 pm.

1987 - Friday - 62° at 6 AM - some clouds - part sun - not bad.  To Mass.  To Waldbaums to shop and Booklet Bethel for a card for Billie Newell's birthday - bought several nice ones.  Wes realigned stone curbs at entrance - took off post supports - graded gravel.  I cut south grass, clipped edges.  Cultivated - deadheaded.  To Freeman's at five for a drink and walk around - they had dredged pond - edged with rock - trees and plants overgrown - needed a lot of maintenance - we are lucky to be at Bogus. 


August 8

1983 - Monday - 63° at 6:30 - Clear - very warm & breezy - dried top of Impatiens Tower.  Forecasted thunder storm never came.  Wes continued making path over cliff - I cut branches and brush at water edge - after lunch Wes cut 4 small trees in same area - improved sight of pond but need the tall trees lifted by Wright Bros.  Picked first big tomato - lots of beans - found two more Tomato Horn Worms!  Awful things - picked blackberries along river for lunch.  Heard first katydids.  Wes doing better. 

1984 - Wednesday - at Asticou Inn, Northeast Harbor - Me.  Cloudy - some clearing in afternoon.  Not great weather.
To Seal Harbor to Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Garden - beautiful.  To Jordan Pond - walked trail - Carriage Road - had lunch - delicious popovers.  Back to Asticou Inn for nap - walked to Thuya Terraces - Lodge and Gardens - also beautiful though not equal of the Rockefeller Garden.  Drink - dinner - read.

1985 - Thursday - cloudy - few showers in morning.  In all 9/10 inch of rain - good.  We drove up I-84 to exit 39 - Route 4 to Farmington - drove around locating museums - lunch at Grist Mill - toured Farmington Museum (17th house) and Hillstead - house built in 1901 full of good paintings - beautiful furniture and setting - home at 4:30 - Cocktail in Garden Room as had cleared - Bit with us.

1986 - Friday -7 2° at 7am.  Foggy - 50% chance rain 
.34 in rain gauge from yesterday's rain - no further rain for us - heard thunder on Sound.
With Gizella I picked flowers for church - at McKeon's along road and here.
Wes worked on dell path wall.  I went to Marcus for milk - cut grass - deadheaded - used Benomyl on plants as lots of fungus around.  We brought out shade for deck table.  Pleasant sitting there in evening.

1987 - Saturday - 67° at 7 AM - Became H H H - very warm sun.  To White Flower Farm for the Rock Garden Plant Sale - bought Cardinal Flower - Leatris Pink Eye Phlox and Heliopsis at W77 - ate our sandwich along a side road - two cars in an accident opposite us before we were finished - a shock to us as well as the women involved.  Home for nap - we were about to plant the Cardinal Flower when Penny and John McLaren came to walk about garden - left at 5 o'clock.  Read papers, after dinner - cocktail in garden room - dinner on deck.
