August 13

1983 - Saturday - 56° at 7AM.  Cloudy up until 6 PM.  Cold enough to wear sweaters outdoors.
Wes went to pick up parts from tailor (zipper) - not ready - stopped at Marcus for milk - first time drove car since operation.  Transplanted azalea from back of Wood Knoll to more front position - had filled hole with peat moss delivered by Pinchbeck - brought up 5 ferns from path over cliff to Wood Knoll and big stone north end.  To Billie Newell's party at 5:30 - home 6:45

1984 - Monday - 70° at 7 AM - cloudy - cleared to warm humid.  Mostly sunny day.
Did wash - Wes dug holes to move Big Rhodendron and Hemlock on South side - had to abandon two spots.  I cut grass - very high and lots of mole runs.  Planted some of the wild flowers bought at Garden-in-the Woods.  Moved Sensitive Fern to Wood open space below pump.  Gizella had killed Horn Worms on tomatos.  I threw away zucchini plant account worms -

1985 - Tuesday - 54° at 6 AM - Clear- Japanese searchers found 4 survivors of plane crash with 524 aboard.  
To record having heard Katydids since Sunday.  
I went to Mass - Wes waited for Wright tree men - two here - cut dead tree on top of hill to North and took all wood away - also cut limb of black birch front of shed.  Wes transplanted native black pine (?) and fir (?) to spots where big laurel were.  I worked at Ballard Garden in morning - picking up fungicide Ferbam from Pinchbeck following - sprayed laurel.  Watered - deadheaded.  Moved ferns under deck.  To Rosses for drink at 5:30 - Fred and Grace Bender there.

1986 - Wednesday - 68° at 7:30 - Slept late - beautiful morning - and day.  Did wash.  To Stop & Shop, picked up washed bedspread at laundry - to bank - to Tinker Stop to leave design of table for marble top.  Home for lunch & nap.  Wes continued work on dell path wall.  I cut grass - spread the 2 bags of chips Wes had bought at Young's this morning.  Picked Hosta, Artemisia and Phlox for church flowers.

1987 - Thursday - 56° at 4 AM - Foggy - cleared to a beautiful day.  Wes put hinges on the second side of gate - drilled holes in posts for hanging but drill not strong enough to screw larger size bit.  He took out rocks below big rock at new planting bed.  I dug up Anemone spreading onto Juniper on front walk bank - terrible roots - replanted them on North slope - east end.


August 14

1983 - Sunday - 47° at 6:30 - Cold - clear.  Bit & Bridget leaving Eileen's for Lock Haven this morning.
Beautiful day.  To 8 o'clock Mass.  Read papers in Solar as nice and warm there.  Transplanted big fern into plastic pot - set it outdoors on upturned trashcan.  Livingroom looks bare without it.  We put new black iron hook on tree over cliff - will hang birdfeeder there.  Brought up 6 ferns Ptridge berry, Rattlesnake Plaintain and Moss from Cliff trail to Wood Knoll.  I saw a Pileated Woodpecker North end.

1984 - Tuesday - 70° at 6 AM - Hazy - Hot - Humid - not bad working in the shade.  Went to morning Mass but there was none account Assumption Vigil Mass.  
Danbury Top Soil delivered 20 yards screened topsoil.
Wes ordered shed at Ring's End.  Mike Morrison had told him he'd help erect it.  I finished planting wildflowers bought at Garden-in-the-Woods.  Wes moved huge stone in new compost path and one big one under left Rhododendron.  To 7:30 PM Mass.

1985 - Wednesday - 70° at 7 AM - Slept late.  Partly cloudy.  Very hot and humid - high 87° but humidity terrible.
Transplanted two azaleas from West Bank to Wood Knoll, taking out big stones in new location.  Watered all Wood Knoll plants.  I watered sun garden.  Cut grass.  Quit at 4:30 for shower, drink & dinner as went to Mass at 7:30 for Feast of Assumption.

1986 - Thursday - 56° at 6:30 - Foggy - Cold night.  Beautiful day - cool - warm sun.  No Mass account Eve of Feast of Assumption.  I worked at Ballard in the morning.  Wes moved stone from Judson line to his new wall behind shade garden.  Bollie Hoffman and her sister Stage here to see garden at 4 pm - visited Gizella's also.  Gizella and I had arranged flowers for church at 2 o'clock and took them there.

1987 - Friday - 58° at 6 AM - Foggy - cleared to a beautiful day - getting warmer and more humid in afternoon.  Wes rented a large drill and made holes in the gate for the hangers - Hung gates and leveled them - we're anxious to close off the opening as deer ate the beautiful clump of Solomon Seal and one Hosta along compost path.  I transplanted rest of wind anemone to wood slope and seven Epimedium from Wood Knoll to new section at well.  Quit early to go to 7:30 Mass for Eve of Assumption.
