August 27

1983 - Saturday - 66° at 6 AM - Rain shower in night - hurray!  Too bad not continuing.  Warm and very high humidity.  Sat on deck in evening until dark.
Cleaned house - did wash - Wes polished breakfast table.  Watered big rhododendrons and azaleas on South Side - all plants there.  Rearranged furniture on deck - took sunshade to Hayloft - it isn't functional.  Took Garden Show Poster to church bulletin board.  In planted Poly Pody against rock in Wood Knoll - found it yesterday over clif all dried out - soaked it overnight - remarkable recovery

1984 - Monday - 58° at 6:30 - Beautiful view over foggy pond when sun came up.  Fair morning - looked like rain in afternoon - started with beautiful clouds.  Very dry - no rain.  I worked at Ballard Garden with Muriel Pedersen - stopped Gran Central for bananas.
Wes dug big rhododendron - in afternoon we moved it back in center toward wood pile.  Watered it well as well as other transplants.  I cut grass.  Picked beans and strawberries - pepper and dahlias & Zinnia for Garden Club meeting tomorrow.

1985 - Tuesday - 70° at 6 AM.  Cloudy - foggy - muggy.  Another 3/10 in gauge from last night's rain - cleared in afternoon.  To Mass.  Wes prepared chart on Double digging.  I cleaned tools and prepared notes to talk at RGC meeting.  Early lunch & nap - picked up Helen and on to Chris Clark's for the meeting - went well - glad to have it over - Panel of three Louise McKeon, Edith Meffley and me.  Home at five.  Wes had cut lawn and worked some more on two huge stones above house/shed path.  Saw a Pileated Woodpecker in the glade at cocktail time.

1986 - Wednesday - 69° at 7 AM.  Dark - gloomy - light shower about 2 pm.  Moved two of the juniper at driveway to area around tree at driveway entrance - cut them back severely.  Brought down stones to raise tree well and hold the soil.

To town meeting in Veterans Park School - got there at 8:40 & missed the quick meeting - okayed money to study turning Ridgefield area back to residential - Home to see couple episodes of "Mapp & Lucie" on Channel 13 - great.

1987 - Thursday - 58° at 7:30 - Slept late account Wes' cough - he has bad nights - Raining, thank God.
To town - gasoline - bank - Brunetti - Stop & Shop - Genovese for cough medicine for Wes - he had a bad night coughing.
Rained most of day - 1.05 at 6 pm.
I made out bulb order McClure & Zimmerman and plant order from Siskiyou Nursery.


August 28

1983 - Sunday - 69° at 6:15.  Foggy - Partly sunny/cloudy/very humid - thunderstorm at 4 pm - 6/10 inch of rain - so glad of it.
To 8 o'clock Mass - read papers on deck - cooler there - watered big hemlocks - rhododendrons again and baby laurel etc on south side.  Left water trickling into laurel on Northwest bank while at Mass.  To Ruth Sharp's at 5 pm - Rosses and Father Tighe there.

1984 - Tuesday - 60° at 6 AM - Sun making sky red over hill - Mostly sunny day - great if you like it dry.
To Mass.  Wes put on grass seed on North Slope.
I picked up Helen Ross and went to Ballard for Garden Club meeting (picnic lunch).  Wes moved Eunonymous, Aldenhamensis to shrub border near road - taking the big Hosta from there - split it - and planted it on South Room garden.  When I returned, we watered the transplants well.

1985 - Wednesday - 62° at 7 AM - Fair - Slept late
Wes dug free the 'Zumi' Crab - I replanted the Lamium on the cliff bank - After lunch - moved the tree back to South about six feet.  Found the tree had originally been grown in a wire basket - still around the ball.  Used wire clippers to remove it.  Watered tree well.  Muriel Pedersen brought me three Lycoris radiata bulbs which I potted in an 8" bulb pan.  To Nancy Carroll's birthday buffet at 7 pm - about [[strikethrough]] 26 [[/strikethrough]] 28 people - Home at 10:30

1986 - Thursday - 59° at 7 AM.  Cloudy.  Breakfast after Mass.  A little rain in the morning - less than 1/4 inch - cleared in afternoon.  To Mass.  To Reclamation - bought American Classic Caviar for Nancy Carroll Draper's birthday - Young's Agway for peat - fertilizer & grass seed - Stop & Shop & Liquor Store.  Lunch - nap.  Moved the remaining juniper from driveway curve to tree well and one up above mailbox - don't know whether they will live - a difficult job

1987 -Friday - 58° at 6 AM - Dark - cloudy - Drizzled most of day.  6/10 inch at 6 PM.  To Mass.
No outdoor work.  Revised bulb order from McClure & Zimmerman & sent it off with Siskiyou order.
Took 4 plants with roots from propagation box in upstairs bathroom - planted them - put in Solar as light & damp there.  Wes rested - had a better night.  Not as much coughing.  I picked up Nancy Carroll's lei from Pinchbeck & delivered it to her.  Her birthday party was fabulous - rum mytai drinks - roast pig - most everyone in Hawaiian clothes as approximate
