September 4

1983 - Sunday. 58° at 6:30.  The nights have been cool for sleeping.  Hazy and warm day.  To 8 o'clock Mass.  Eileen came at eleven - we walked cliff path and up to Grouse house - Fred showed us through. Had lunch - Eileen left at 2:30.  We took a nap.  At 3 o'clock went to Joel and Sally [[?Anyan's]] to look at Terry Keller's work on grounds.  Home at 5 to water - pick vegetables - basket of beans - tomatoes - cucumbers - onions & peppers.

1984 - Tuesday - 56° at 6:30.  Slept until 6:10.  Cloudy - one-half inch rain at 7:15 - another 1/10th in morning shower.  I shopped at Ridgefield - bank - drugstore - hot soup for lunch - wore sweaters.  Gizella gave us her Fuchsia - they are going to Chicago Thursday and abroad on 15th - Al Tempanelli brought back the yellow geraniums in flower - came with Jeanne and cousins from Italy - No English.  
No work at Ballard account rain - will work Thursday - went to Mass. 

1985 - Wednesday - 69° at 7AM, Sun 6:26 - 7:23.  Sunny hot humid - luckily a nice breeze - High 84°
Transplanted Eileen's big azalea to end of garden - moved the Pieris to the right to fill the gap - Artemisia in Pieris place - split the Siberian Iris there and spread it same garden.  Wes dug up Clethra and planted it above two big rocks recently moved above house/shed walk.  Finishes transplants this fall, except for perennial garden - clipped, cultivated - watered.  Warm evening.

1986 - Thursday - 58° at 6AM - Drizzling - cleared to a mostly cloudy day - .42 in rain gauge.
Wes finished ditch for electric line to new pump.  Pump man here to install pump and cable in ditch - will return when electric work is completed.
I shopped at Waldbaum - banked - then replanted Hosta plants whose roots had been eaten by mice - don't know whether they will live.  Eileen retires Oct 1st.

1987 - Friday - 48° at 6:15 - Fair - Quiet morning without dogs - had a piece of toast in peace.
Wes checked the deer fence line as a deer had eaten Hosta near Piper - found a break down deer track - mended it - will add another post.  I transplanted a lot of cuttings - brought down cold frame & set it up near shed to hold potted cuttings.  White Flower Farm delivered Colchecum bulbs - planted them near Azalea prunifolium - discovered big rock near birdbaths - Wes took out one - another beneath it.  Pinchbeck delivered chips & other supplies - put chips around blueberries behind fence.


September 5

1983 - Monday - 62° at 7 AM.  Slept late:  Labor Day.  Hot and humid - uncomfortable. 
Wes finished placing stones at west end of wall garden top.  Moved in gravel and wood chips to that area.  Won't do transplants until we have rain.  Cleared planting area at top of cliff on North end - later took up Lawnboy and cut there - very overgrown in last two years. 

1984 - Wednesday - 50° at 6 AM - Fair - cool and beautiful day.  Water pressure was low mid-morning to about 4 pm - leak in distribution line.  Shopped Waldbaum's and Meeker's.  Wes worked on stone steps to Wood Knoll from shed walk.  I cut grass - cultivated flower beds - brought in compost to fill transplant holes.  Dug up ferns in woods - brought them to new stone steps and where the Heuchera were - they went up to perennial bed.  Tool shed pieces delivered. 

1985 - Thursday - 72° at 6:30 - Warm night - kept fan on.  Sunny - hot- humid day - 30% chance of a thunderstorm but only 5 drops here.  To Mass.
To Stamford - no Aris Isotoner wool gloves at Bloomingdales as yet - Bought saute pan and bras - To Town center bought ice cream maker for Holmden's Christmas at Williams Sonoma - too crowded for brunch there so ate at Brocks - bought soup bowls at Pottery Barn - stopped at sculptor James Knowles to look at work - no garden sculpture for us.  Home - nap - Cut grass - Watered.

1986 - Friday - 60° at 7 AM.  Cloudy - some mist - light rain evening.
Wes went with Alex to get 3 barrels of horse manure from Jessups - Jimmy Redmond of Castle Electric here to finish electric work on new well pump - couldn't reach the pump man to get him here to start up.  I cut grass in one fair time in afternoon.  Picked up 2 blue bedroom rugs from Ziegler only to find on dirty - have to return.  I dug ten holes for day lilies at mailbox - Move [[?burs]] this fall.

1987 - Saturday - 48° at 7 AM.  Foggy - mostly fair day - clouded up in afternoon!
Wes repaired break in deer fence - deer trail - put a higher post and more wire on top of north line (Grouse) as deer got in while Eileen & I were walking dogs.
Eileen here for lunch - brought sandwiches & salad & David's cookie dough - talked about her visit to Holmdens.  
After she went home we worked to get the big rock out of deep hole at new well area - big job.  I put the box of Cardinal Flower cuttings into coldframe - making plants from stems but very small.
