September 14

1983 - Wednesday - 5°4 at 6:30 - Cloudy - cleared to cool afternoon - no hoped-for showers.
I took Tarragon Vinegar and Zucchini Bread to Hawsie Nash's - met Karen Nagle at Ballard Hall on hostessing Sept. 27th meeting - to bank for cash. 
Wes had cut off the main trunk of the big hemlock near compost - one minor trunk still living.  Cut grass.
Made cookies for Bobby - groomed Herb Wreath - Wes cleaned off big rock at north woods.

1984 - Friday - 68° - Cloudy - Rain predicted - hope so - only a few sprinkles - too bad.
I drove to Hawsie Nash - left there at 7:30 for New Canaan flower show with 3 entries - at their Solar Greenhouse - shopped Stop & Shop - bought Cabot stain for shed - home at 10:30.  Wes had dug holes for wild Eunonymous at Wood Knoll and Shed - moved four of them.  Bud Wright came to go over tree work.  Gizela brought us Iron Cross Begonia to mind while they are abroad. To Ruth Sharp's at 5 for a drink.

1985 - Saturday - 44° at 7 AM - Fair - No frost here - Beautiful fall day.
Drove to Bedford Village - walked into Mianus River Gorge - interesting, difficult walking - thought not suitable for family outing.  Came home through Ridgefield - papers and bottles to Reclamation - bought sandwich at Brunetti.  Transplanted Solomon Seal to back off house/shed walk.  Went down over cliff - need to rake path - brought up ginger canadense caught in rock in center of path.

1986 - Sunday - 48° at 6:30 - Fair beautiful day - very dry.  To 8 o'clock Mass.  I ironed tablecloth and napkins.  Wes finished backfilling near new pool. 
Searched for rocks for edge - found several - tried them.  Difficult job in confined space.  I went to Nancy Carroll Draper's to look at plants she wants to give to the Greenhouse - brought back begonias - will return for aloe.  Cut grass.  Transplanted several perennials to new garden.  To Scott's for dinner at 6:30 - Rosses & Sattlers there - home at 10 pm

1987 - Monday - 64° at 7 AM.  Cloudy.  Some 2 1/4 inches in rain gauge from last couple days.  Cleared before noon -good to see the sun.  We measured the north deer line as Wes wants to order heavier wire.  Put wood chips on mailbox area after taking out four remaining day lilies - we crawled under deer wire to spread chips.  After lunch I cut grass and Wes rolled it as mole damage is severe.  Wes wired deer fence together on north line.  I dug up area below triangle garden as want to move dwarf geraniums there to try them.


September 15

1983 - Thursday - 43° at 6 AM - Cold night - Clear - cool day. To Mass
Prepared Rosemary and Impatiens Tower for show - they were picked up by Carol Stoddard & Lee Dickenson - Tower hardly fit - broke stems.  I went to work on Passing Committee 1-6 pm.
Wes put topsoil around two of the hemlocks on south side - Watered everything as azaleas wilting again
Early to bed.

1984 - Saturday - 60° at 6:30 - Cloudy - light showers only 1/10 inch - more driving back from New Canaan but not in this area. Did wash - then to the Flower Show in Nature Center New Canaan - surprised to see my White Dahlia had one Third - home for lunch and naps.  Increasingly colder and damp, so no outdoor work.  I made cookies and stuffed chicken breasts.  Wes caught up on magazines and papers. 
Vargas left for Hungary.

1985 - Sunday - 44° at 6:30 - Fair, another beautiful day - a little warmer but we put the heat on for breakfast.  To 8 o'clock Mass.  Plant stand was to be delivered, but a phone call at 9:15 advised had to be postponed.  Did a work wash.  Put rosemary standard in pot.  Threw away the kitchen spider plant - can't rid it of scale.  Wes had shop time and then worked on pump/shed path.  I moved some Striped Wintergreen from area near shed to back steps and above Clethra.  Watered transplants.  Cut grass - will lower height of blade for future cuts.  Lots of mole runs.

1986 - Monday - 44° at 7 AM - Good sleeping - Cloudy.  Rain - thunderstorm Monday night - (35/1pp Tues. AM).
Wes bought concrete blocks - bricks- and a few pieces of broken bluestone - the bricks to support edge of new pond.  We moved the Baptisia to top of Knoll shrub border.  Rest of day Wes worked on stones around pool.  I picked up plants Nancy Carroll is giving Ballard Greenhouse - transplanted more perennials into new garden - watered grass above mailbox and some new bushes & trees - very dry.

1987 - Tuesday - 50° at 6:30 - Fair - beautiful sunny day - unexpected shower at 9 PM.
I worked at Ballard 8:30/12:30 - Put soil & sand into bed in Memorial Garden and culled out Chrysogonum virginianum & replanted them - big job.  Wes had cut off remaining fence posts on north side - put in short posts for stops - spread wood chips inside north fence.  After lunch & nap I went to Waldbaums - bank & Marcus.
Transplanted Geranium Lancastriense into cliff garden - moved a couple Heuchera forward in perennial garden.  Wes filled washout hole in forward border of Joe Keller's dug garden.
