September 16

1983 - Friday - 44° at 6AM - Up early - Flower Show Day - Fair cool day - Cloudy at evening - hope for rain. Left at 6:50 for show - took Chrysanthemum & Herb Wreath. Passing Committee 8-9:30. Home to meet Eileen - went to Country Crafts - to see garden ornaments - picked up Helen - to Keeler Garden House for brunch - to Flower Show - won Blue for Rosemary & Chrysanthemum - second for Dahlia - honorable for Wreath & Heather -. Eileen left for home - Mike brought Guy Cormier to look at diningroom floor - We returned to show to pick up. Wes rode in Louise's truck to deliver Impatiens Towers - I picked flowers in Louise's garden for church.

1984 - Sunday - 40° at 6:30 - clear. Beautiful day - sunny and cool - needed sweaters. To 8 o'clock Mass. Picked beans & tomatoes - took some to Eileen & Mary. Left here at 10:15 for Eileen's - admired her new plantings - on to Mary's - admired her new paint job - she gave us dinner. - We managed not to bring up any political controversial subjects. Home at 5 pm with bread, raspberries and another dwarf tree ivy from Eileen. Mike had put shingles on shed roof - now finished.

1985 - Monday - 46° at 7 AM. Good to sleep late 
Fair beautiful day. Wes had shop time. I went to Waldbaums and Marcus - the entrance at Marcus in bad shape due to road construction - prepared dinner - Wes realigned, raked and knocked stone on path over cliff. I transplanted Grape Hyacinths from various places to side of garden room flagging.  Brought up two Rattlesnake Plantain from cliff walk. Rosses here at 5:30. Alex very thin doesn't look or feel well - they left after ten o'clock - pleasant evening.

1986 - Tuesday - 54° at 6 AM - clear - windy - cool. Wes went to Mass. I prepared for Ballard Garden work - Took Ruth Sharp's begonias, and 2 Echeverias I had grown - and Heliopsis Golden Plume which we planted in garden. Muriel, Carol Schneider and Ricky worked, Muriel & I planted Iris in pots for NY Show next Spring. Richard Nota finished at new pool with a little help from me at times. Took in hanging plants.

1987 - Wednesday - 54° at 6 AM. Clear. There was .05 in rain gauge from last night's shower. Beautiful day - to Mass. Transplanted 2 Azaleas and one Leucothoe from Bog Path to Well Area Garden - shifted one Azalea in Garden Room to Leucothoe spot. I also transplanted some perennials. Discovered that deer had come up cliff in one opening - Wes will screen off. Moved big stone in well area to join others close to road.


September 17

1983 - Saturday - 56° at 7 AM - Cloudy - supposed to rain - none here until a light shower at 3 pm - not measurable - but electricity off from 4:10 to 5:25 pm. Did wash - to Waldbaums and Marcus - Gizella and I arranged flowers at church - lunch - nap - transplanted Artemisia Silver Mound - 3 Stokesia - 2 Scabiosa to Northeast triangle - threw away Gaillardia - moved Coreopsis to front of Allium - planted Chrysanthums Eileen brought up in Perennial Garden - Timpanelli's asked us for supper when electricity off. Home at 9 pm.

1984 - Monday - 42° at 6:30 - clear. Sun 6:39-7:01. Beautiful fall day if you like it dry.
Wes finished putting the stain/paint on the shed - adding another coat all around. Then he moved the cans to the side of the shed - hiding there nicely. Will eventually clear up the Kindling to make area flat. I polished living room brass - waxed Solar floor - watered new north grass and all transplants there (ran down well) Used house water for some of South transplants. Cut grass.

1985 - Tuesday - 47° at 6 AM - Dark - Fog rising over pond. Beautiful day - warm sun - didn't need sweaters. To Mass. I worked at Ballard 8:30/11:30 - four of us so cut down all Iris. Stopped for gas in the can enroute home. Wes had continued work on path down to lake. After a long nap (needed) Wes went over cliff again - I cleaned up Mother Fern and Confederate Jasmine pots for Darien show on Thursday. Then I joined Wes to admire path - do some raking there.

1986 - Wednesday - 42° at a 7 AM - Beautiful - sunny and cool but sun warm. Did wash. Went down deer trail - dug up 3 ferns for new pool area - found cedar log with moss off cliff and put it also in pool corner. I went to Mary Luke's for a couple of day lilies, planted those and two of our own at mail box bank - that is now completed. Wes moved sod from compost holding area to fill in sections of new grass above mailbox - he worked on big stones at north slope - I dug up triangle bed - in moving sunscreen to attic Wes stepped thru ceiling of shop lavatory - luckily didn't break his leg.

1987 - [[strikethrough]] Thursday [[/strikethrough]] Friday - 65° at 7 AM - Fog - cloudy. Had rained at midnight - 3/10 inch - rained most of day.
To Ridgefield - gasoline - Brunetti - left Chelsea clock for repair - Reclamation - Stop & Shop - Route 7 to Danbury to Pharmacist for Wes' pills - After lunch & nap - Wes put Propagation boxes in attic - balanced checkbook. I made chocolate shortbread (not suitable) and almond cookies for Garden Club meeting Tuesday. Also made Ratatouille - phoned Bleckwehl (Carolyn & Pete) in Fairfield re Kelly's visit there - They are house hunting - will stop by Sunday. (This is Friday Sept 18th)
