October 12

1983 - Wednesday - 56° at 7 AM - Raining.  Boo with us - we slept late - Wes' side very painful.  Lazy day - wrote letters - read papers - walked Boo between rain showers.  Wes worked in shop.  Drinking or not had martini at lunch time.
Rained heavily in afternoon - At noon had .6 in gauge.

1984 - Friday - 48° at 6:30 - clear - beautiful day -- perfect (except no rain) weather continues.
Did a wash.  Went with Gizella to pick up church key & containers from Louis McKeon as we do the flowers in October.  Checked the flowers in church which had been left from a funeral.  Alex and Helen picked us up at 11 AM. - drove to Hopkins Inn, Lake Waramaug - they gave us an anniversary luncheon - admired the fall color - bought a pumpkin & apples at New Milford.
Home for nap - soup for supper.

1985 - Saturday - 38° at 6:30 - Fair -  beautiful fall day - needed heat on and jackets to work outdoors
Wes had shop hour - picked up prints at Sturdevants - couple good of group - I ironed dinette drapery - tablecloths etc. - cut grass - planted some dwarf narcissus bulbs. 
Wes carried brush from well area and from top holding bed to roadside - now have two big piles to be taken by Grounds keeper - next week we hope - 
Heard two flocks of geese flying south - saw one - beautiful,

1986 - Sunday - 44° at 6:11 - Dark - off and on cloudy day - a little milder.  To 8 o'clock Mass. 
Wes finished taking wood sides from raised bins. 
I washed hair - read papers - To Hammond Museum at 12:30 for lunch as guests of Anne and Frank Tracy - their 18th anniversary - Morrisons - Timpanelli's,  Ada Franken and Elizabeth Hull - home at 4 pm.  Wes took nap.  I watered Wood Knoll and North slope plants.

1987 - Monday - 42° at 7AM - Cloudy - cold damp morning - better in afternoon - cleared at 4PM
Ed Wright showed up unexpectedly with one helper and cut down the big oak limb hanging over the south lawn. Also chipped up a lot of brush along road.  After they left, Mr Michael Thompson came to pick up brush - he took two loads from up the road.  We carried brush from compost path and on cliff and behind big Rhododendron to road.  Wes used saw on big logs - he also cleared deer fence on Judson line - that was badly crushed.  I made lemon bread for Ballard crew but Marie phoned food would be brought by Charlotte.


October 13

1983 - Thursday - 66° at 6:15 - Dark -  Wes had bad night account his side - Boo has been good, sleeping in her bed.  I went to Mass - Wes rested.  There was 3.25 inches in rain gauge - inclusive.  I went to Ballard - worked in Greenhouse is too wet to transplant.  Wes started to put his painted locomotive together - still has to put another coat of paint on cab.  Started Mary Luke's book on Catherine of Aragon - we took Boo for a long walk up Bogus.  Light rain again at dinnertime.

1984 - Saturday - 52° at 6:30 - Mostly cloudy day - breeze blowing leaves down.  Did a wash - to Stop & Shop, dropping off Flower Arranging Workshop notice at Lucienne Hartcorn's.  Wrote letters. 
Wes in shop making frame for cuttings tray.  
I made stuffed chicken rolls as practice for next Sunday's guests.  Arranged for birthday luncheon for Alex at Le Chateau Sunday the 28th.  Cut grass.  Wes raking leaves ahead of moves on south side - raked leaves into bog - cleared water channel - Picked strawberries for our evening fruit.

1985 - Sunday - 48° at 6:15 - Raining - off and on lightly all day.  To 8 o'clock Mass.  Learned Dan McKeon fell from his horse yesterday - fractured skull - doing ok.
I caught up on papers - did some mending - made muffins - Wes worked in shop.  We started on a walk after lunch and nap but rain sent us home quickly

1986 - Monday - Columbus Day Celebration - Holiday 
60° at 7 AM.  Cloudy until 11:30 when it started to mist - rain at night.
Transplanted the perennials at front of pieris japonica/rhododendron border to shade and perennial garden.  Wes brought down last of topsoil and started the grading for extending the grass in front of garden room.  Snack -  nap - to Coggershalls at 1:30 to have dinner with them and Ginger Dreust who had been in NYC with her family celebrating her 70th birthday.  Home at 6:35.

1987 - Tuesday - 36° at 6:30 - Fair - Beautiful cool day.  I worked in Ballard Garden in morning.  Cut down almost all the perennials - shopped for groceries before going home (20 minute wait at checkout)
Wes cut brush and repaired deer fence.  Cut on top of big rock at north in afternoon - a mess there.  I cut off all our Hostas - put away more stakes - trimmed a few trees near compost - looking neater around house.
