Pearl Harbor Day

December 7

1983 - Wednesday - 38° at 6 AM - Black wind clouds - startling when sun hid them in spots - became fair but very high winds - blew down tree over power lines - no service 11:32-5:49.
Vee Grenier and helper washed all windows except Solar - cost $74 and looks clear and marvelous - I was just going to sew when electricity went off - We picked up sticks (lots) Wes cut wood and made a fire early - kept the den warn.  Brought out candles and Sterno - heated soup for supper.  To 7:30 Mass for Feast Immaculate Conception. 

1984 - Friday - 26° at 7 AM - Slept late.  Saw the Red Bellied Woodpecker on South side - hope he now comes to the suet - he did come to the suet later - great news. 
I went to lunch at Keeler Tavern with Helen, Millicent and Lucienne - shopping at Stop & Shop enroute and a stop at the bank.  Wes in Shop.  Cold day but good sun for a nap in the den.  Wrote some more Christmas cards.  Early dinner. To 7:30 PM Mass for the Holy Day. 

1985 - Saturday - 26° at 7 AM - Fair - Cold - beautiful winter day. 
Wes went to Marcus for milk - bought stamps - We started writing the Christmas Cards - Tied up the Arborvitae and Ilex Glabra - filled feeders - found it too cold to stay out very long - swept front walk and south terrace of snow - sun melting it partly. 
Wes in shop. I  sewed hem of print tablecloth for deck table. 

1986 - Sunday - 30° at 6 AM.  Nice morning - cloudy afternoon.  To 8 o'clock Mass.  Read papers - to Joan and Mike Mannion's at 11:15 - brunch - lots of food - Mimosa Cocktail - Rosses - Bill and John Schaub there also - Brenda Schaub sick - home at 3 pm - nap - out to walk fences.  Wes showed me plans for covering North Slope plants. Brought in gas grill - enjoyed "Paradise Postponed", Episode 8, in evening. 
(I was Lector at 8 AM mass)

1987 - Monday - 28° at 7 AM - Fair, Sun 7:06/4:28 not as windy  - good for outdoor work. 
Wes inspected the deer fence - we put more wire on Judson side - using the 4 foot vinyl coated rolls - the 2 we had - better than chicken wire. 
We finished putting wire over Juniper at entrance.  Put wire partly around Arborvitae - piece wasn't big enough to cover garage side. 


December 8
Feast of Immaculate Conception

1983 - Thursday - 28° at 6:30.  Light dusting of snow - beautiful sky in East - (South).  Sun 7:09 - 4:28 
Sunny, cold beautiful day.  Wes went for a haircut - bought stamps - bananas (39 cents/lb) and a few other groceries at Waldbaum's.  I did wash - cleaned - a little sewing - we took our mile walk - picked up leaves - spread some salt hay.  Wes split wood - Saw "The Gathering" a Christmas show on Channel 13. 
Columbia - The 9th Shuttle Mission - landed safely. 

1984 - Saturday - 24° at 6:30. Beautiful sky in East, various shades of red and grey.  After a cloudy very cold windy morning became a beautiful winter day. 
Wright Tree men - two - here at 7:30/11:30 - cut down six trees on wood knoll - (one was beech tree stump in front of big rock) trimmed beech near well - and took away huge stump along upper road - good job.  We wrote more cards, had a nap in sunshine in den - I washed hair - Wes had shop work - finally has ring for tank opening in place.  To Ruth Sharp's for drink at 5 pm - beautiful full moon.

1985 - Sunday - 34° 6 AM - Feast of Immaculate Conception celebrated yesterday - partly sunny and cloudy - I was Lector at 8 AM Mass.  Read papers - ironed - Wes in shop for a couple hours.  To Rosses for luncheon at 12:30 - Tracys, Morrisons & Elizabeth Hull there.  Home at 4 - nap - to Ellises at 5:30 for Open House - home at 7:15 - our drink (we didn't have anything during the day) soup - watched first two episodes of "Bleak House" on Masterpiece Theatre.  Noticed deer tracks at wall garden.

1986 - Monday - 39° at 6:15 - Cloudy - cleared mid-morning - cloudy again in afternoon. 
To Youngs - no more posts - bought Christmas Cards at Jenni's Copps Hill - saw Ricky & Jim Harrison there - they move to Vineyard Jan 12th.  To noon Mass - lunch & nap.  Wes to Ridgefield - back to Youngs for their last chicken wire.  I washed and ironed.  We put deer fencing around three rhododendron on North Slope - finished at dark.

1987 - Tuesday - 28° at 7 AM - Beautiful sky - pink clouds when sun rose - then cloudy - then clear again - not a bad day.
Wes went to bank for Canadian funds to send for places for a B&O Pacific 3/4 scale locomotive.  I ironed.  We finished the crossword.  To 12 o'clock Mass.  After lunch to Post Office - mailed Christmas cards (Alex Ross) to Mary - Wes to Reclamation - I went to Stop & Shop - we bought Christmas tree at Young's  Home before dark - cut off a piece of tree trunk and put it in Solar in water
