December 25

1983 - Sunday - 5° at 6:15 - Record cold for Christmas Day - Put heat on entire house - Sun 7:18-4:33.  Extremely cold and windy - sun, but no warmth in it. However, better than yesterday for traveling. We went to 8 o'clock Mass - prepared dinner and house - Wes set up fire in livingroom - put electric heater in dining room - Eileen & Mary here from 11:30 to 4 - good day. Phoned Bit - she had Betsy with her, John & wife coming & Neil's family. Couldn't reach Joan & Hooker - they phoned at 7:30. Kelly in Atlanta.

1984 - Tuesday - 42° at 6 AM. Clear - windy - became much colder by evening - 28° at bedtime - Good traveling day for Eileen and Mary. To 8 o'clock Mass (the Quiet Mass Father Medynski calls it) Prepared dinner - filet of beef etc - Eileen, Boo, and Mary here at 11 o'clock - nice holiday. House was good and warm - winds causing downdrafts in livingroom fireplace. 
Eileen and Mary left at 4:30 - we cleaned up, did dishes, & the crossword puzzle. Saw "Great Expectations" on TV - Called Bit & Kelly - No answer at Holmdens

1985 - Wednesday - Christmas Day - 32° at 6AM - Dark - no snow yet hope it holds off - cloudy - a few flurries - temperature dropping but not bad traveling for Eileen & Mary - here at noon in Mary's car - Eileen's having conked out after a week's trouble. Boo eating better we were glad to see. Good visit - Mary had a bad cold - they left at 4pm - We each played our new CD records, and had also good music on QXR and Channel 13 in evening. 
Bit phoned - we called Joan & Kelly.

1986 - Thursday, 42° at 7 AM - Light rain - supposed to taper off this morning - Sun 7:18-4:34. Mostly misty fog - a slight clearing in mid afternoon but at least not cold or freezing. Prepared house and dinner for Eileen, Mary - Boo and Snow - here at noon- Wes had made a good fire. Good holiday - phoned Bit, Joan, & Kelly. Took a short walk with dogs - Eileen & Mary left at 4:15 reached home safely. We cleaned up - read papers - Couldn't finish crossword. The half rack of lamb was good but I'd never do it again. - Marian Burros' Scallop salad was great.

1987 - Tuesday - 42° at 6 AM - Rain in morning partly cleared up PM. - actually saw sun couple times! Sun 7:18-4:33. To 8 o'clock Mass.
Prepared dinner for Eileen & Mary, here at noon. Happy day. Filet of Beef very good. Boo and Snow liked it. Stopped off at Billie's at 4:15 - Eileen & Mary went home from there via 84 & 684. We cleaned up - read papers. Had phoned Bit, Joan and Kelly during day - all well.


December 26

1983 - Monday - 6° at 6:30 - Fair day - not quite as cold as yesterday - high about 20°. Sun 7:19-4:34
I planted my Lily Enchantment - delivered Louise McKeon's and Anne Tracy's - took rest to Hawsie Nash. Then to Greenhouse, worked until 12:15. Home for lunch - to Commerce Park Theater to see "Terms of Endearment" only to find their sprinkler system burst and no show - home after a stop at Marcus - Wes split wood - I filled bird feeders - made stew.

1984 - Wednesday -21° at 6:30 - Fair.  Sun 7:19-4:34 
Hazy sunny day - looked like winter but not bad 
To town - paid real estate taxes - bank - Ridgefield Hardware for battery for Wes' new clock & other small supplies - Gran Central - Reclamation - home for lunch and nap. Put insulation in stove fan outlet - Wes worked on insulating living room fireplace but not successful. I did more handsewing on bird wall hanging.

1985 - Thursday - 16° at 7 AM - Clear - Sun 7:20-4:32. Beautiful winter day - sunny and cold. No mass as Father Medynski visiting his brother.
We paid Mosely for the Conn. Bonds we are buying with the Texaco sale money - left film at Sturdevants - had copy of CD bill made to send for discount disc list & suppliers. home - Wes stuffed up outside duct of stove fan with insulation to prevent cold air in the kitchen - raised mirror over sideboard - recovered livingroom fireplace - to Keeler Tavern at 3:30 to work on Candlelight Tour - Smoke alarm brought firemen -
To Rosses' for drink enroute home at 6pm.

1986 - Friday 36° at 7 AM - Cloudy. Sun 7:19-4:34. Sun came out a few times but misty gloomy & damp, but not cold. Wes' stomach still upset - ate little until dinner. Stopped by Mall to see if restaurant Barnabees was open - it was - easy access in back - on to Waldbaum's to shop for soup supplies and other groceries if Bit and Betsy come. Squirrel had chewed out rubber gasket from new bird feeder and water had gotten in - fixed that with temporary plug - Did crossword puzzle - I made soup.

1987 - Saturday - 42° at 7 AM - Cloudy day - cleared at night. Left at 9:15 for Eileen's - from there Vera drove to the Metropolitan Opera - had lunch in Grand Tier Restaurant - performance of La Traviata - Thomas Fulton Conductor (looked 16 years old) Anna Tomowa-Sintow Violetta - Alfredo Neil Rosenshein - Germont was Sherrill Milnes - very good - back to Eileen's courtesy of Vera - we reached home at 7:15 - good driving weather instead of rain predicted - stars and new moon out.  
Radio broke - quite a tragedy.
