that vicinity. This marl was shipped to the Institution direct from Bowden by the courtesy of the gentleman in charge of the fruit company, whose plantations are situated at this point; for which our gratitude is due, as the transportation of heavy freight form one part of the Island to another, in Jamaica, is very expensive. From this marl, after it was received about 1500 specimens of fossils were picked out which cover, according to Mr. Burns some six or seven hundred species. Since about three hundred species is all that have hitherto been known from Bowden deposit, it is evident that the working up of this material when practicable, will result in a very large addition to the known fauna of the West Indian miocene.
