an important function of the department of Mollusks and has regularly been referred to in previous reports. Correspondence of this kind was had in 1892-93 with 96 different persons, involving some 330 letters covering about 800 pages of writing nearly all of which was done personally by the Curator. In 1893-94 450 communications were received from 150 different people and the written responses covered some 920 pages of letter sheets. No record of the number of specimens identified could be kept for want of necessary clerical assistance, other more important routine work demanding the attention of the force. A large number, however, have been reported on for various correspondents.
