In this paper, the genus Gnathodon, which, hitherto, has held a very uncertain place in systematic classification, is placed by the author in the Mactridae, on account [[crossed out]] both [[/crossed out]] of the characters of both the shell and the soft parts; and it is shown that the young shell is essentially mactroid. The synonomy [[synonymy]] of the species, notes and descriptions are given.
