As the animal floats with the base of the shell turned upward and the spine downward the uniformly darker color of the base is probably due to the exposure to sunlight. Most of the Violet Snails are tropical, although they are sometimes found stranded along the [[strikethrough]] beaches [[/strikethrough]]^[[shores]] of temperate seas. At times after a storm the beaches in the warm parts of the world are piled high with a wonderfully rich colored mass of the animals, their [[rafts?]] and broken shells.
