A Grateful Sparrow

1. - A little sparrow, shivering perched
Upon a lonely tree;
Besides a frozen pool of ice
In a [[crossed out]]dull[[/crossed out]]white snowy lea.

2. - Oh how he wished for summer days
With fruit and seeds to eat;
And fresh green leaves and mild warm air,
And fields of golden wheat.

3. - Just then a merry flock of birds,
Come flying from the town,
He saw that they were starlings,
As they came swooping down.

4. - They all looked fat and full of food,
And merry as could be;
Their feathers shone with with glistening sheen,
As they lit on the tree.

5. "These birds have food, and so must I"
The little sparrow thought;
"And I must go where they have been
To find what I have sought."

6. Away he flew with steady flap,
Of quivering little wings,
His only thought was that of food,
The best of earthly things.

7. And when I looked upon our porch
I was surprised to see;
Among the crumbs and flock of birds,
His grateful eye on me.
