By DR. LINDSAY R. CURTIS [[/caption]]

DEAR DR. CURTIS:

I have always assumed X-rays revealed only a person's bones, but recently I heard of a technique for outlining the entire unborn baby X-ray. Is this possible, and if so, what the advantages?
MRS. S. G.

DEAR MRS. G.:
The procedure to which you refer is called amniography. It involves injecting a dye into the fluid surrounding a baby, a dye that will show up on X-ray and thereby outline the infant's soft tissues. This technique is also employed often to determine whether a woman has an abnormally large amount of amniotic fluid -- a condition suggesting first that she may be carrying

twins; second, an Rh problem; third, diabetes of the mother; and finally, it suggests the possibility of congenital malformation of the baby.

In the latter case, for instance, a baby may have a herniation of the brain or spinal cord, placing part of these organs outside the bony framework. He may also have abnormalities of the gastro-intestinal tract, or a condition in which part of the bladder lies outside the abdomen. Any of these conditions cause excess amniotic fluid.

DEAR DR. CURTIS:
Regardless of your own personal views on abortion, I think you have an obligation to offer readers some unbiased guidelines in the matter. At this very moment thousands of women are contemplating abortion, convinced that's what they want and need. Nevertheless, abortion is still illegal in some states. As a result, such women either have to bear unwanted children or violate the law, dealing at times with quacks who may ruin them for life, even take their life.

Please offer some much-needed advice.
L.V.

DEAR L.:
A doctor's guide to having an abortion by Dr. Robert E. Hall, President of the American Society of Abortion meets this particular seed very nicely. Available for one dollar through New Ameerican Library, the book is meant for those women you speak of, those who have already decided to have an abortion but don't know how to proceed.

If a woman is determined to have an abortion, it is vital that she do so in the safest, most effective manner possible. A Doctor's Guide explains in 57 pages where to obtain help, how to make application, and provides important information regarding the procedure itself.

DEAR DR. CURTIS:
I have often wondered why doctors don't use a deipilatory instead of shaving a patient before surgery. Seems to me this would be just as effective and far less painful.
L.R.S.

DEAR S.:
How right you are. Furthermore, arecent survey of 400 female operations reveals that the rate of infection was several times higher with razor preparation than with depilatory. The infection rate, incidentally, is even greater when women are shaved 24 hours before the operation than for those haved immediately preceding it.

WIN AT BRIDGE

A laydown 7 - almost
By OSWALD AND JAMES JACOBY

Every time we write about luck in team-of-four matches we remember a hand played in the finals of the 1935 or 1936 Spingold. It was long match and coming into the last set of boards the Four Aces held a 2500-point lead. This was before the days of IMPs and the matches were played at total points.

Oswald Jacoby who sat South picked up one of the biggest hands he had ever held. He opened with a forcing two-spade bid. West stuck in a non-vulnerable nuisance call of five hearts and Dave Bruce, sitting North, raised to five spades.

Needless to say, Jacoby went right to seven. He expected to spread the hand and claim as soon as dummy hit the table, but the wrong dummy came down.

By this time you can see Jacoby's problem. He could discard three of dummy's diamonds on the top clubs but there was still a problem about the queen of diamonds. Jacoby wasn't worried about West holding three to the queen. Seven was surely going to be bid at the other table and all Jacoby wanted to do was to get the same result as his opposite number.

He won the heart opening; drew four rounds of trumps; cashed the clubs and the ace of diamonds; entered dummy with a fifth trump; led a second diamond and relaxed happily when East produced the queen.

Jacoby has never said what he would have done if East had played a low diamond.

Morris Elis of New York, who played the hand at the other table, has committed himself. He said, "I was going to toss a coin and see if you could outguess it."
