Indian In Trespass Case Files Petition

Grace Thorpe, an Indian facing trespassing charges in Sacramento Municipal Court, has asked the Superior Court to intervene.

In a petition filed today, she asked the Superior Court to strike down Municipal Court Judge Sheldon Grossfeld's refusal to allow her and 34 other defendants to seek the aid of the public defender.

Attorney Aubrey Grossman of San Francisco is representing the Indians, who were arrested June 6, 1970, and charged with trespassing on Pacific Gas & Electric Co. land.

Claiming it was impossible for him adequately to represent so many defendants, Grossman asked Grossfeld to relieve him as attorney for all the accused.

Grossfeld denied the request last week. The Indians are to go to trial March 8 before Grossfeld.
