Dear Friend:

This appeal is most urgent and very important for Indians!

Earlier this year, President Nixon announced plans to begin transferring 6.8 [[underline]] BILLIONS [[/underline]] of dollars worth of federal surplus lands to local governments, commercial and industrial firms for recreation and other public uses.(reference: New York Times, March 31, 1971) Why not return some of these surplus properties to their original owners.....the American Indian.

Some of these sites would make ideal ecology, culture, and heritage centers; others would be more suitable for schools and training complexes; yet, other uses could be: health clinics, hospitals, half-way houses for the unemployed, ex-convicts, alcoholics, drug addicts....orphanages run by Indians for homeless Indian children...museums...Pow Wow grounds... community and tribal centers...head start and day care centers...athletic fields....housing for the homeless.

ACT NOW! Before the excess and surplus lands are gone. ACT NOW! To save the Indian people from extinction.....

WRITE: United States Senators; Henry Jackson, Paul Fannin, Lee Metcalf, and George Mc Govern; Vice-President, Spiro Agnew; Secretary of the Interior, Rogers C.B. Morton; Secretary of Health Education and Welfare, Elliot Richardson; Commissioner of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Louis Bruce; and your local legislators. Tell them to place Indian tribes and organizations on the top priority list to bid on excess and surplus properties. [[underline]] Send us a copy of your letter. [[/underline]]

PUBLICIZE: Put this in your newsletter. Tell friends and strangers too.

LETTERS OF SUPPORT: Send us a letter of support, on your letterhead, with a copy to pertinent legislators.

JOIN R.S.L.I.P.: A national non-profit organization of concerned Americans.

Sincerely,

Your Representative
