Indians Form Group To Seek Surplus Land

DAVIS — A newly organized national organization, Return Surplus Land to the Indians Project (RSLIP), will have headquarters at DQU (Deganawidah-Quetzalcoatl University) near Davis.

State committees will be established to research federal and state surplus properties and make the information available to interested local Indian tribes and organizations, spokesman Grace Thorpe said.

A national RSLIP committee will lobby in Washington DC to have Indian tribes and organizations placed in the top priority category for surplus property disposal, Miss Thorpe said.

The organization began after President Richard Nixon stated on March 31 that he plans to transfer federal surplus lands valued at $6.8 billion to state and county governments and commercial and industrial firms, she said.

RSLIP's mailing address is DQU, Box 409, Davis, 95616.
