and liquid court plaster or New Skin. Lastly, dust the nails lightly with cream and, with polish rubbed into the center of the palm (the operator's palm), go over each nail until it glows. Repeat this process with the right hand.

Polishing the nails is of utmost importance. If the nail is rough, first use a rough powder like pumice and when the surface is smooth use "Lusterite" or some other soft powder polish. About ten light strokes of the buffer at one time is sufficient, for more than that number is liable to produce a burning sensation which is injurious to the matrix. Use a long, light sweeping stroke.

HOW TO FILE THE NAILS

Hold the file between the thumb and first two fingers. This will give the operator a firmer grip to hold the file securely. Allow the end of the file to pass between the third and the fourth fingers. Before beginning to file ask the patron what shape she desires and lift the corner of the nail with the edge of the file and hold the finger securely wit the thumb and index finger of the left hand. The file is held an inch from the point (the risk of the file slipping and injuring the matrix is thus eliminated). After filing, bevel or smooth the edges with the emery board. If the patron is nervous, use the emery board entirely instead of the file.

DIFFERENT STYLES OF FILING

1. A good oval nail, fairly short the free edge. Commonly known at the American Style.

2. A more showy style is to file the inside of the nail to straight line. The free edge or top is just about even with the finger tip and the outside is oval. Put a strong tint of polish on the straight side and let it blend into a flesh color on the outside. This is known as the Almond Style.

3. A popular style for smart women is a long, pointed and oval nail with two straight sides. Leave considerable free edge at the point. Polish with a clear finish. The is the French Style.

MANICURING PROCESS SIMPLIFIED

With the instruments sterilized and placed handily for the operator along with all the required equipment to give a manicure, proceed as follows:

1. Examine the patron's hand for blemishes or infections.
2. Remove old polish if present.
3. Shop nails of left hand by filing, starting with little fingers, and soak in water.
4. File right hand.
5. Take left hand out of water and dry. Soak right hand.
6. Dip orangewood stick into cuticle remover and go around the groove of the nails.
7. Dip orangewood stick into peroxide and nail white and work under the free edge of the nails.
8. Push back cuticle gently with metal cuticle pusher, working from the base of the nail around groove to the free edge.
9. Trim the jagged edges of cuticle with the scissors, hangnails with nippers.
