THE MADAM C. J. WALKER SCHOOLS

Be careful in working and trimming cuticle.

Use care in applying the polish.

Finish the manicure neatly but as quickly as possible.

Clean up table, remove soiled towel and empty bowl of water after each patron.

Sterilize all tools and replenish supplies for the next manicure.

HAND AND ARM MASSAGE

Various exercises, helpful in beautifying the hands and arms and acquiring soft, smooth skin are as follows:

[[image - Method of Giving Hand Massage]]

Slowly knead the palm and back of the hand.

Gradually pull, stretch and twist the fingers.

Stroke, twist and knead the muscles of the arm with both hands.

Relax and bend the wrist.

Rub the hands together until they glow with warmth and vigor.

Using a long movement, stroke the arm from the shoulder to the finger tips.

Use the rotary movement on the arm from the shoulder to the finger tips.

Roll the arm from the shoulder to the finger tips.

Taper the fingers by pinching the ends.

Madam C.J. Walker's Nourishing Cream, which tones and adds life to dull skin, should be used with these movements. This massage will give shape and grace to an otherwise ugly hand and arm, and elasticity and symmetry to a large hand which might seem impossible to improve.

TO BLEACH THE HANDS AND ARMS

The skin on the hands and arms is somewhat more difficult to whiten than the skin on the face. For this reason, in order to obtain the best results, use Madam C.J. Walker's Tan-Off consistently and freely. A special bleaching pack such as is used on the face may also be used. See Chapter on Facials.

CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

DIET AND WEIGHT CONTROL

Water, Air, Exercise, and Diet, these forces are the body builders. They are the mainstays of our lives. Our bodies are three-fourths water and one-fourth solid tissues and although water enters largely in the muscles, bones and blood of our bodies, it is not a purifier. Water is not a producer of energy, it is not a tissue builder nor a body heater, but is absolutely necessary in mixing foods and their chemicals. It assists in circulating the blood, flushing the kidneys, forcing the skin to throw off its poison through the sweat glands, giving elasticity to the bones, and regulating the temperature of our bodies. Water is, therefore, an essential element to health and life.

Far too many women of our race have been noticed for their lack of proportion and perfect body symmetry. Very often the bust and the upper bart of the body are too large in comparison to the lower portion. This, of course, was caused by improper diet and the lack of proper exercise. However, this tendency toward disproportion is fast disappearing, and a casual glance at any group of school girls will portray figures of unusual perfection. Intelligent diet, athletic activities, and physical training in the schools are responsible for this great change.

Air is most necessary. When we cease to breathe the pure air we cease to exist. Through the respiratory system, the nose, the pharynx, the trachea and the bronchial tubes, we breathe in oxygen and breathe off carbon dioxide. The oxygen purifies the blood and the carbon dioxide carries away the waste and impurities from the entire body. It is a matter of common knowledge that proper breathing is necessary for good health.

EXERCISE, ENERGY AND BUOYANCY

An early riser starts the day with energy. A cold bath follows the swinging of Indian clubs or other exercise. In our school days we learned deep breathing and calithenics. The movements were for the exercise and development of the arms, legs, chest, abdomen, neck, shoulders and head. We were even taught that the proper opening and closing of the eyes brought beneficial results. It is not necessary that we take up these movements, for you need only resort to memory and they will soon come back to you. Start the music and practice the exercises every morning upon arising.
