giving little resistance. They are very tough and not very "little". We are not beating the Japs.

It snowed all night & all morning. The snow is about 4" deep & light and dry. It is coldest yet -- 11° above in morning. All morning I read paper, practiced, did homework, & wrapped last present--for Doris Chichester--a sailor pin in a blue painted box with pasted on dots a little bigger than one I gave to Patsy made last night. Has flowers on top but 1 row on each side only yellow on long side, red on other - on bottom edge. I painted inside white. Then about 3:00 I went to see Dolores & watched her paint board train track was on red & work on pink candle drop necklace for Jean Saunders, girl next door - 13 in 8th grade (Rather dumb). Then I went home & ate at 6:00. In evening I listened to radio, did homework, etc. Mother & I went to Dolores's to see if they wanted to send for a turkey to a man in Va. we are getting one from. But didn't - probably none left - many people won't have turkey or chicken - not on market - for army, etc.

December 21 Monday

ToDAY is the Birthday of Stalin, Dictator of Russia, is 63 years old.[[actually Wikipedia says Stalin birthday is Dec.18]]
Fair & coldest yet 2° above!! We have to go to school all day Mon., Tue., & Wed.. But because of lack of gasoline, to avoid rush hours, we get to school at 10:00 instead of 9:30. I went to school as usual. Now coffee (1 cup per day per person over 15), sugar (2lbs. per person per week), gasoline (several types A, B, C cards - we have B - C is best but not much). Bananas & canned things are getting off market. Every once in a while bananas come in but not much more. Certain canned food is made. Rubber bands & paper clips are unobtainable & butter is scarce. No more whipping cream. There is no beef on market & little meat. Pins & needles, building materials, silk & nylon stockings are almost completely gone. Still lots of ships are sunk off coast but not so many. Allies are on offensive. I didn't have much homework & I stopped on way home at Dolores's but didn't go over later.

Transcription Notes:
Marginalia on left page starts at the bottom left margin and seems to wrap around three sides of the page. On left page, the writing that starts just above "ToDAY is the Birthday of" also goes down the right margin, underneath the other right margin writing. Wavell was the British commander.
