2 Vol No. 1066. 1867

Office Local Supt. D.C.
Washington. Aug 17th 1867.

Resp'y returned. It would appear from the information that can be gathered that Abraham Brown (whose real name was Leonard West) was a Slave of Thomas Ufford who at that time 1812-14 lived about 10 miles from Georgetown - West (or Brown) married Delia West and had two children: Edward West & Madison West. Delia was also a Slave of Ufford. The Ufford family moved to Georgia or Ala, taking with them West & his son Edwin but left his wife Delia & son Madison in Georgetown. Abraham West (or Brown) escaped from Georgia came to Georgetown saw his wife but immediately went to Providence R.I. where he wrote some 10 years after to Delia stating that he had changed his name to Abraham Brown, that he was getting along well & wanted her to join him there. No information can be gained as to whether Edwin is living or dead. Madison grew up, married but left no issues when he died.

He is buried at Mount Zion Cemetery near Rock Creek.

Delia West did not go to Providence but afterwards married James Carter & had 7 children 3 of whom are dead. The others are living in Georgetown.

It would appear that Edwin is living - is the only heir to the property of his father Abraham Brown. I have been unable to get any clue to the residence of any of the members of the Ufford family in Georgia or Alabama.

If some of them could be found it could be ascertained no doubt whether Edwin West (or Brown) died without issue or is living.
