Resp'y returned with the information that the public books & records within alluded to, were never received by Mr. Vandenburgh, through his own neglect, as no order was received, directing me to surrender them to him or any other person. At the time I was relieved at Kendal

Green Barracks no Officer, was present to assume charge of public property or records as Supt, and all the property for which Mr. Vandenburgh was responsible was turned over to a person sent from his office to receive the same, and left in charge of a Watchman; one cooking stove being allowed to remain in the possession of a poor colored woman living in the immediate vicinity of Camp, of which a full statement was made and the Watchman instructed to call for and deliver the same to my successor whenever he might call for or want it. I know nothing of the other articles mentioned except the saw and buck?, which I am informed were removed with some of my things through mistake, and the charge of Mr. Vandenburgh that I have unlawfully removed public property "is false and unfounded!
The books & records, together with the saw and buck, are in my house in Washington, & I have directed my son-in-law to see Mr. Vandenburgh, and deliver the same to him.
