My Dear Sir,
Your letter was recd on 31st July. I am happy to give you the additional information desired. We do not hire the Freedmen but permit them to make their own contracts both as to the time they shall work & the wages they shall receive We of course will interfere should we find that they are being imposed upon. The contracts are made and witnessed in this office. We can furnish any number of farm hands but at present can not furnish you a woman. The demand for women is greater than the supply. We can furnish families the Father and Mother working for wages & supporting themselves & children. I thank you for your kind suggestion in regard to advertising in the Baltimore American. I shall be happy to act upon it. This office is on the corner of 14th & M. Sts

Very Respectfully &c.
Capt. Supt &c

Dear Sir
Your letter of date July 25 Addressed to Maj Genl Howard in reference to the employment of Freedmen having been referred to me I have the honor to reply. We can forward to Syracus almost any number of Male hands by having timely notification. Female hands as yet are scarce. We can furnish families of Freedmen consisting of the Father and Mother and from one to five children some of the children being sufficiently large to work. Farmers having extra buildings on their lands could take a family, employ all those sufficiently large to work while the Father could support the whole family with the wages he would receive. Persons securing servants in this manner will find them more contented and willing to remain for a longer time than when they are separated. We forwarded 29 single men to Rhode Island last week Will you please write me informing me exactly as near as you can the number and class that you can find employment for. Could situations be found for a considerable number we will endeavor to send them as soon as possible. I shall be very glad to hear from you soon
