Freedmen are obtaining homes. This Office is under my charge. The Freedmen make their own contracts and we record them at this office. In order to meet the expenses in part, a fee is charged of $1.00 for male hands and 50 cents for female. If you desire it we will upon your order stating the work to be done, wages paid &c try to collect the hands for you.

I have the honor to state that there is due Henry Purnell deceased son of Dinna Williams for work done upon the fortifications north of the Potomac ($23.75.) Dinna has not made her appearance at this office. In case Henry Purnell has no wife or children living his mother can get this money by having an order from the 2d comptroller of the Treasury upon Brig Genl B.S. Alexander, Major. Corps of Engineers in charge of the defences of Washington Office corner 19th St & Penn Ave up stairs

I wish you would call at the house of George Matiny on E St on the Island Bet 4 1/2 and 6th Sts & inquire into the condition of Laura Jackson and her 3 children who are sick. go as soon as you get this. Issue to her & her children such things as we may have that she may need & if they need medical attendance report the case to Dr. Purvis & request him to render such assistance as they may need. Please return this with your report on the other side; of the investigation made in this case.

I am happy to send you three men Danl. Parker (a hewer Scott Roan & Wm. Carter. Roan & Carter are to cut & score. They have all signed the same kind of Contract as those who went last week. Scott Roan advanced the money to travel to Hoods Mills $2.50 each on my assuring him that you would pay the amt to him as soon as he got there in order that he might send it back to his family. Parker and Carter agreed that you should pay Roan the amt. he advanced them & charge the same to them. I can still send you more men if you want them.
