Sir,
your communication in relation to my giving employment to Joseph gray (Freedman) is recd, and I presume from the date has been lying in the post office for some days, as I have not been in the city for several days. I cannot promis Joe employment on his return to New Orleans, he left my service about 7 weeks since at which time I was paying him $7 1/2 or $7,50 cents per week for his service. From enquiry among others in my service I hear that when Joe left here he had in cash about $150.00 if Joe returns and I am wanting hands I will give him the same wages he was Receiving when in my service, I am Paying my best men nine dollars per week.
