of getting freed-men or women to fill such places. A gentleman who has been in some way connected with the operations among the freedmen for several months gave me the address which I have placed upon my envelope

My present object in writing is to recommend earnestly the selection of some suitable person in this city, or in some other central position who shall have charge of the business of finding employment for freed men & women in the vicinity. I am not seeking such a place for myself, for other engagements will not admit of my taking it. Neither am I inclined to suggest any person for such a situation. But supposing that there are a large number in and around Washington who have not employment, & knowing that there is a demand for efficient helpers, male & female, in this part of the country, I take the liberty of writing to you, that if practicable some means may be devised for bringing employers and laborers into communication, to the advantage of both.

Very respectfully Yours
(Rev.) Jno. G. Baird
