Preble March 13th

Mr. Vandenburgh,

Your answer is rec'd and in reply will say that it would be very difficult to say what wages we would pay a person before we knew whether they could do our work at all. Of course they could not earn as much at first as after they had been here a while. We will pay them all they can earn and treat them as kindly as white servants, which is all one can ask. Even if they had been used to work at the South, our customs are so different that we should have to teach them over again.
