Services performed by Mr. Blish. Mr. L. H. Blish, midshipman U.S.N., was assigned to this department January, and although he had received no preliminary training in zoological work, and was wholly unacquainted with the marine forms of invertebrate animals, he at once entered upon his duties with much earnestness. He expresses a desire to engage in future studies in this branch of zoology, during whatever cruises he may make, and if this department of the museum can sufficiently interest him as to the value and importance of this line of research and enable him to obtain a far start toward the accomplishment of such an object, it will consider itself more amply repaid than by
