Verrill, had charge of the dredging operations of the Steamer Fish Hawk. In addition to the general work of dredging and trawling, the curator paid special attention to the use of the tow net, at different depths, in collecting the free swimming copepods, an important element of fish food, on which, while living, color and other field notes were made. Large numbers of copepods, parasitic upon fishes, were also obtained, studied and figured. During the present year, the curator expects to devote much time to the foreign collections of Crustacea, especially those from Alaska, and other Pacific regions, which offer great inducements for study.
