Report of the National Armed Forces Museum Advisory Board As Chairman of the National Armed Forces Museum Advisory Board, Mr. Brown stated that the Advisory Board had submitted its report to the Regents on January 12, 1965. The report recommends that a National Armed Forces Museum be established in the Smithsonian Institution; that Fort Washington be transferred from the National Park Service to the Smithsonian as a site for this museum; and that the Institution seek legislative authorization to plan, develop, and construct the National Armed Forces Museum. In the ensuing discussion, it was commented that the Institution had a number of competing requests for legislation and appropriations pending before the Congress, including legislation to authorize construction of the National Air and Space Museum. The consensus favored accepting the report with the understanding that the Board of Regents would revise the third part of the recommendation of the Advisory Board by deleting the term, "development and construction," so that the legislation to be sought would authorize planning only, at this time. It was emphasized that no construction would be possible until the Fort Washington site had been acquired. On motion of Senator Anderson and seconded by Mr. Brown, it was VOTED that the Board of Regents approves the report of the National Armed Forces Museum Advisory Board, dated January 12, 1965, subject to the condition that the legislation which would be sought would authorize only the planning of a National Armed Forces Museum, not construction, at this time. The Board further approved the submission of a request for an initial appropriation of not to exceed $100,000 for planning.
