SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION National Museum Act of 1965 The bill to provide legislative recognition to the National Museum of the Smithsonian Institution and to museums generally was introduced in the House as H.R. 7315 and referred to the Committee on House Administration. In the Senate, it was introduced as S. 1310 and referred to the Committee on Rules and Administration. Discussions are being held with a number of museum directors who have expressed interest in this legislation and it is expected that hearings will be scheduled toward the end of June by the Senate Subcommittee on the Smithsonian Institutions under Senator Pell. Other Legislation The views of the Regents were requested on the following proposed Legislation: H.R. 921, "To establish the National Oceanographic Agency." The discussion developed that the research of the Smithsonian, in the Museum of Natural History, would be greatly impaired if its competence in biological oceanography were removed to some other agency. H.R. 4022, "To supplement the National Air Museum of the Smithsonian Institution with a National Transportation Museum in order to make the complete history of transportaion available for the benefit of the people of the United States." The Regents voted in January to table a report on the potential use of the Union Station as a transportation museum. In regard to the provision of the bill relating to assistance to nonprofit organizations, it was recalled that the Smithsonian for many years has provided limited offic space to the American Association of Museums.
