13. (approach plates).
Things to check pre-descent:
1. field elevation & safe altitudes
2. runway length & width
3. nav aids for approach
4. minimums for approach
5. details of approach
6. missed approach instructions

14. compasses & modes:
whiskey compass- permanent magnet floating in oil (not reliable during turns, acceleration-dip angle)
HSI compass card- gyro that's slaved through a servo loop to magnetic north (Error signals -> torque gyro).
MAG position = slaved ("always" in this position)
DIRECT GYRO = not slaved (still a gyro, but disconnected from servo loop... free to drift precess).
FAST SLAVE = increased gain in servo loop

15. ADI & standby ADI both work on gyros with error sensing in 2-axes. "FAST ERECT" ups the gain to right the ADI level flight)... takes 2 min.
