Quirigua, Guatemala
Tues. 27/5/1919

Sweetheart:
The sun has broken thru the clouds, which were setting very black & sombre, & everything is fair again. Since I have been here I had received only one letter, from mother, until today, when I got a batch of 7-- 5 from you, up to the date of receipt of my Cuban card or letter, and 2 from my mother -- and I too gave up all thought of the divorce court. It is sad but true that when we get away from home and letters don't come, even tho [[strikethrough]] they [[/strikethrough]] we know they are somewhere, we begin to think of divorce courts + all sorts of dreadful things. I am all right now, even if I don't get any more. I am glad you got the job at Bussey. Hubbard is a good sort, altho inquisitive, and Charley too is just as you say.
Just went out to see a double rainbow, emblematic of the way I feel since getting your letters. You dear old girl, I shan't run away on a trip like this again without taking you along. I have been homesick ever since I started. Human turns out to be the best in the party, to my way of thinking. I took the trail into Honduras with him, Ashmead & Sandoval. On the fourth day we parted, and I chased over to Pittier. Pittier seemed rather grumpy at seeing me, & said "I thought you were going to stay at the hospital at Quirigua." We had been talking over plants we had got (I followed him all the way, several days behind) and he said "Well, you got one plant I didn't find," and he seemed to think that was all the good my trip had done. I know perfectly well I got a lot more, as I have here, but I dont care what he thought. Both he & Gilbert have gone back & I am stopping with the rest at Quirigua Hotel, going off for short trips each day or up to Amates to look after my plants.
