mandante, + we - Gilbert + I - make it our headquarters for botanical work. We are eating + sleeping at the hotel here at Bananera, in charge to Mr. Stone, engineer for the Fruit Co. Pittier + Whitford left for Barrios yesterday, P. to return to Wash. + W. to stay a few days more. Gilbert is to return next week, + I expect to join Ashmead at Amates, go to Lake Izabel with him, + come home the week after. That is, it is very probable that I will start home about the 5th  June instead of the 12th. Can't settle the date until I see Major A., who is in Honduras, but the sooner I get back home to you + the rest of the folks the better I shall like it. The country is all right, barring the heat - but the evenings are cooler than in Wash.- but the truth is that I am homesick, + have been all along. Anyhow, we wont for separated for more than three weeks longer, + hereafter I shall insist on your coming with me, for any trip as long as this. Guatemala is no place to bring a woman to, but Gilbert, who has been about a good bit, says that Panama, Peru, & so on are all right.
   We had a piece of news tonight, that Bennett, of the Soil Dept., has been detained by the authori-
