I passed one or two clusters of coconut palms.  The naked stem is 20 or 30 feet high & bears a tuft of leaves 10 or 15 feet long at the top. The nuts grow on short branches among the leaves. I found comparatively few Composites, and all but one withered before I sat back, as I had only my bundle of new clothes in which to put my plants.  At one place I caught a grayish-white moth, but he was too big to get into my bottle & so I had to let him go. I found a pretty pink Echites at one place, and collected several Malpighiaceae, some with yellow, others with whitish flowers. It was very hot & dry, so I started back about one o'clock, taking a more direct road & letting a street car do part of the work. When I got back I sat down, drank a couple more limeades,

and pat the dust off my boots.  On the way back to the wharf I stopped to buy some newspaper stock to put my plants to press in, as all my materials are in the hold. I got a good sunburn on my face, and my nose just above my left nostril is stained a deep brown from the juice of that Comocladia. Took a few pictures of the town before we left.

I am now sitting in my deck chair waiting for the lunch bell.  Waiting for meals is the commonest employment on board ship. 

We took on one or two new first class (Spanish) passengers at Santiago, & several [[crossed out]] second [[/crossed out]] third class, including a family of 3 (white), and a nigger girl.  About 9 o'clock last night we went to the after deck
