side down, which caused me to smile internally.

I hope you wont have the same trouble and trust you wont as you have seen more of my scrawls than poor madam has and so know what to expect. As I came up town yesterday noon I saw a cab standing in the middle of the square that runs around the Arc of Triumph. The driver had gone to sleep and the horse also but the general public about the place seemed to be very much interested in something inside the cab. I thought at first that someone was hurt but then when I saw the driver snoozing peacefully in his box I knew that that could not be, so I mingled with the vulgar heard and peered into said cab and there I saw a fellow spoiler of canvas. He was painting the square with a young lady just walking acrost it. I looked over where he seemed to be looking and there was his model standing there in the middle of the sidewalk posing by the hour. The funniest part of it seemed to be that people took no notice of her and all crowded around the bus. She looked quite stunning standing there, she was the most decent looking model I have seen since I have been here. The pose was something like this. [[image 1]] She seemed to be walking along and to have just turned her head to see something to her right. He had it very cleverly sketched in. I would have given all my old shoes if I could have got in and sat down and watched him while he worked. You see that is just the kind of thing I want to paint so it would have done me a great deal of good. Pretty soon he called the model over and she got into the cab and they drove off leaving the crowd gaping at the vacant square and wondering I suppose, as I did why I couldn't paint it just as well as he did. But the fact remains just the same that I cant and probably wont be able to for some time, but I am just conceited enough to think that I may be able to some time if I work hard enough. You might make a border for your room of that scene that I spoke about in the first of the letter, the one of the man leading the horses; it should be something

like this: [[image 2]]

You might vary the monotony of the scene by putting in a stub tailed dog here and there like this. I never drew a dog and dont know exactly how to go about it but here goes. [[image 3]] I drew this dog? expressly for the purpose of working in that tail I am pretty proud of it and consider it a masterpeace, never mind the rest of the dog, that dont count.

Then below the principal design you might have a small border of something like this [[image 4]] Now I consider that idea as being worth at least half a million. So just think of the amount of generosity there must be in my composition when I present you with a grand composition like this. All I ask in return is that you should [[strikethrough]] thinkl [[/strikethrough]] think of a fellow now and then and keep him posted on yourself and family in general. Benson and Smith, two fellows who went from the school last year and the same fellows that we expected to meat when [[strikethrough]] wk [[/strikethrough]] we got to Paris have just come up from the country. It seemed good to see some fellows whom you had met before. We all went out to breakfast together and then went up to call on two young ladies, that are here studying; they are also from the M.F.A. but belong to the Crowninshield crowd.

We staid there till I nearly went to sleep. I dont think I ever spent a more miserable afternoon, that is in company, in my life; if there had been any way of escaping without attracting notice I should have done so. But I had to stick it out. I had rather go to the dentist
