Venise [[Venice]]. Jan. 28./85

My dearest little Emmie.

I received a lovely long letter from you today dated the 12 in which you said you had not had a letter for 12 days.

My scrawls dont [[don't]] seem to catch on as regularly as I write them: first you get them and then you dont [[don't]] get any for a couple of weeks. I expect these from V. will be all mixed up as I cant [[can't]] tell which steamer they will catch, so dont [[don't]] be alarmed if you get more than one at a time. I got one from Sophia today in which she said she thought we would like Germany better after we had been there a while. Well may be we would but I guess we wont [[won't]] try it this time. I am getting tired of trying new countries and as V. suits me as well as anything I have seen I guess I will stay here for a month more anyway I have so much work on hand that I can hardly finish in that time. I think I wrote that I should go back to Paris for a month if mother was willing and there was no chob [[job?]]. This has been the coldest winter on the continent that they have had for years. In Spain it is the coldest since 1820 and the suffering has been immence [[immense]] both on account of the earthquaks [[earthquakes]] and the cold. We are having lovely weather here now and so we work like slaves.  

In Paris they are having it cold too. They have skating in the Bois de Boulogne and all Paris turns out to see the sport. Skating there is about as rare as honest bank cashiers are in the U.S.

I had letters from the boys in Paris the other day they are working as usual and nothing particular has happened. All are anxious to have me return as they say it is all serene.   I sent that pin with the last letter: I am rather curious to know whether you will ever get
