All is lovely except the english tourists that come to the hotel. They are worse than six months in jail. The specimen that we have now knocks them all for disagreeable qualities. He must be over 6 ft. and disagreeable in proportion to his size. He streams all the doors wide open and wears a flannel shirt at the dinner table. I guess he has lived in a place where they dont have doors. I gave him a pence of his mind about doors tonight and John Bull got very wroth much to our amusement. I must say that I hat [[hate]] the english that I have met so far more than poison. If I had'nt sworn off swearing for the time being I could express myself better on the subject

I am sorry my dear mother gives me such a bad character (in winter time) but cold weather always does liven my faculties for swearing and deadens them for work. 

From all I hear you must be having a lively winter and the old thermom. [[thermometer]] is doing itself proud. In regard to Henrys smoking I do think it is foolish although I do it myself more than I had ought. I told him that I thought that as long as he had once left off he might as well continue in the good course but could'nt make him see it in that light so said no more about it.

Travis says that his shoes wont stand wearing night and day and that as they will have to last him till he gets home he has to be saving with them; so lets them rest during the night.

Washing is so expensive here that we wear our clothes right through and then use them for paint rags. Necessity is
