There are only two in the place, the other is in a cheap circus and the way the people stare at the poor beast nearly breaks my heart. Just think of a city with only two horse in it and those not in the streets. No sidewalks here or rather the whole street is a sidewalk, and not much of a one at that. Some times it seems as if you were going into someones [[someone's]] cellar but if you keep up courage and walk right on you either come out all right or bring up at a canal; then you have to go back and start fresh. It is a great thing for cultivating ones [[one's]] temper. I have got mine in quite good controll [[control]] just by trying to find a certain place on my own [[?track]]. Some of the fishermen who come in here are just stunning; they wear the queerest costumes you can imagine. Any kind of a cap or hat perched on one ear on or the top of a big mop of black hair, a big coloured

scarf or something around their necks, old faded jackets all patched so you could'nt [[couldn't]] for the life of you tell which was the original peace [[piece]] and breeches of the same material and to top or rather to bottom the whole a thick pair of coloured woolen stockings pulled on over every up to their knees and then toes stuffed into a pair of shoes without heals [[heels]].  

They go shuffleing [[shuffling]] along in the most reckless manner possible. 

I have seen one of them sit on the edge of a boat for half an hour at a time and swing his feet; I suppose just to see if the shoes would come off. I was betting even at first that they would but was obliged to give it up as a bad job for they stuck as if they were glued.

The shoes are like this and they just stick their toes into them. [[image]] 

Some are more primative and have nothing but a strap over a block of wood like
