Since I saw you last we, my mother & I have been here & in Italy in the South & again at Bachivillers & then in our own country place. My mother has been often ill & I often nurse for weeks at a time, & this last month ever since 10th of Dec she has been a victim to [[grippeness?]]. She is now up & goes out but is still very ill, she says to tell you that the woman you knew as my mother is no more, that only a poor creature is left! Which proves that her head is not quite so affected as she thinks, but there is no truth that her head is affected & the depression is at times very great. In fact life seems very dark to me just now; three weeks ago I was exchanging cables with my brother Gard & they were all including my sister in law & the baby, (sister to the boy you remember), & the boy himself on the point of sailing. You who have taken care of old people know what it is - We bought a country house in the neighborhood of Bachivillers a year ago. We were turned out of the [[Palter?]] place by the marriage of our fat landlord to a young woman desirous of living in a "chateau", so we bought one our own - Last summer
