We are drowned in seas of blood - and if my letter had a certain fierce republican ring to it - you may know it is the result of reading Carlyle.

The boys are increasingly cute and refreshing - [[?]] mailed his pitiful paper yesterday because not allowed to dine here on rice pudding! - Harry came alone - J - previously having declined to come,- said later amid tears - "I've changed my mind"! Harry said he hoped (to uncle Will - making his boat) uncle will "would call his attention" when he really began to cut the wood! - But like enough you have been told all this before - I am generally too late with [[?]]

Uncle Will met Chas Henry Hart yesterday and he said that you would have taken the "Mr. Smith on" again,- if it had not been against the law, for your Cochran Picture!- They seemed very pleased with it. Uncle W- did we tell you - He declares that he has stopped writing to you for the present - and will confer his devotions upon Belle. So he says - but we will see - It is taken forever - since our last letter but we don't complain - and we know that you must have more than ever to do and see - now that you have gone to work. Grandma hopes you will take a studio for yourself and paint a picture for the Salon - It is so delightful to think of you lering [[learning]] all those wonders of art - & history too - Mary Brown met us yesterday on street - almost in tears to think that you did not see Amcher there and his pictures - "Why didnt [[didn't]] you." & so forth; She would have been so glad to have sent you over etc etc — Imagine the rest.
