And there is a deep glen at the side into which the gardens descend. And there are long alleys there of huge trees - narrow with water running through the centre dripping from one stone basin to another, with perhaps an old stone lion at one end, where the fountain begins - and you see off into other vistas and walks for which sequestered is the adequate word. And there is a pathetic grandeur and loveliness about it all, impossible to describe. We stayed the whole afternoon, and I shall go again the first

It seems a desecration to mention the Sewers next. We went there yesterday afternoon, Cecil, Constance, May and I. Leslie put us up to going, and Cecil took it up and got a permit. They take large parties down twice a month. It is amazing down there Big, clean, lighted by electric light, and no end to it - streets of it - in all directions. We went first in cars which run over the sewer, proper, which is a gutter about 5 ft wide in the middle. Men pulled the cars along. There was no engine and afterwards we went in boats also
