and makes herself a comfort - at least to me—  She read Howells Venetian Life aloud to me, and it was a treat to reminisce all that loveliness—   Two young American men from Boston have come since "my last" and are going tomorrow - their name is Manchester and they are evidently rich though not tip-top swells - the youngest knows the Woods—  They are making all the grand tours there are, and sight-see vigorously - and stand up for their Native Land.

Poor May had to out a great deal by herself while I could'nt, but Mr Coombes kindness came in again - and he took her to the Boboli Gardens—  I shall have to miss some things - not important ones and we shall get off on Friday—  Siena next, for a few hours only and the rest of our trip will have to be rather hurried as we shall never find anything

Pension Selb— November 14th—

Dear Aunt Eliza:

You are probably all fancying us somewhere else, but we are here yet, and the only way that I can see to keep you from the annoyance of finding that we were not where you imagined us at a certain time, is for us not to mention dates at all.   We did not expect to be here after today, which is Wednesday, but on Thursday when we went to San Miniato a cold wind blew on the back of my head and on Saturday I developed the next thing to an influenza, and in this blessed house have I been for three whole days—  If it had not rained I should have got out sooner and this afternoon we sallied out much bundled up, And saw the San Lorenzo with two beautiful pulpits made by our adored Donatello, in one of which Savonarola preached at the Medicis, who sat in their lovely Tribuna over against him
