than anything else - with all his gifts and success.  Paris has done him harm that can never be undone.  He is extremely serious and thoughtful, has no social gifts.  He is like Lawrie in company - listens and giggles over the funny things other people say - but talks in a streak eloquently when he is started on something that can be talked about.  He also often reminded me of Mr Martack.   He was weakest when he smiled, and then sometimes reminded me of Louis Bruickerhoff—  
Of course I saw his best side because that naturally 'turned up' when he was with me—  He believed in my earnestness and yet I was not any more artist than woman.  There never was an atom of flirtation nor anything but friendliness between us—  There are some strange points of resemblance between us I never saw anyone who was as much like me as he is—  He felt it too and though we never mentioned it he often said little tings that showed he had

we have bought a number of house keeping things but not forks yet, and today for lunch I went out and got a bit of steak which I cooked over the wood in our little fireplace - laying it on the tongs and turning it with a hat pin.  We had two small saucers for plates, and I used a hair-pin for a fork.  May would'nt have this and used a crust of bread and a knife—  It was good any way and calculated with lots of good bread and butter to nourish us. That I am determined to be—  I am so fat and well now - and am not going to starve—  Last night at our restaurant it was'nt so nice = we went later and some soldiers came and dined at the table next us - and as the room was small they seemed very near - I am more afraid of soldiers than anything else as they always think themselves too good-looking to be offensive.  No one did anything disrespectful but we are going early tonight and shall by this means avoid anything of this kind—
