I read all often aloud to May while we were waiting for Matthew Arnold to take away our beefsteak plates and bring us our 'haricots verts— Going early we have M.A. all to ourselves and no one dining - at that hour, only some old habitués playing cards and drinking some kind of white stuff in a quiet respectable sort of way in the Café adjoining, and they dont appear to see us at all— They have a hideous black bulldog in there, that came and looked at us and said nothing— I went to the Studio this morning with some things but Mr. Escudiez is not quite out yet so I cant get in - shall tomorrow and then I'll get my new boots out of the box and we'll have one lamp and be very comfortable— We then spent the rest of the morning at the Bon Marché - and I got my self a ragged Persian rug for $5 - very nice and I can darn it and came near getting another also five in good condition and really a great bargain Thought it would be a good way to spend the $10 you gave me which I put into the general fund And had [[had'nt]] spent particularly yet—
