of going—  You must remember the portrait is only a sketch and three quarter life size - It's principle quality is that it has life and an [[underscore]]inside[[/underscore]] - it does'nt look very well [[underscore]]painted[[/underscore]]—      I am glad Uncle Will liked Harrison's 'Midnight Marine'  I think it is a beauty and I helped to paint it—  That is I sat and counseled, while A.H. wore a path in the floor up and down in front of it - patting on dabs of purple and green—  And he did a number of things at my suggestion of which I was very proud.

The Hurlbut bought the small original study for it - which I liked less than this one which is an improved copy—

Mr Lasar is in The Seventh heaven at present because the rich man in America who lent him money to get a start here - has given him an order to come over to America

next summer, and paint the portraits of all his five children.  Lasar has earned and paid back all the money the man lent him and is now in his economical way independent—  We are all delighted about it as the poor little man has just suffered the failure of his portrait of the eldest Miss Kinsella [[underscore]]not[[/underscore]] a beauty - whom he tried to paint under difficulties - had forty sittings and finally put both his little feet through it—    Mrs Esté's portrait was such a success that he expected his next effort to be the same—  He has no taste and thinks too much about reflections, which is no use when you are not trying to paint out-door air—   He needs to go to Italy badly—   May and I have been to the Louvre and enjoy it [[underscore]]much[[/underscore]] more now than before even—

Mr Lasar's 'Como' is prospering - and the 1st of Jan a number of the men's class at Juliens [[Julians]] - including
