[[right page]] Studio— Monday— Feb 11th— [[archival note:]] [1889] Dear "folks" I'm posing for May who is squinting at me to see the best view. I dass'nt work this afternoon because this evening we begin at Colorossi's and as I've been painting Louise all the morning I have to do nothing particular in order to begin a chef-d'oeuvre tonight. I was amused at Etta's last letter saying how nice it was to be able to think of me and know what I was doing at a certain date. She thought of me as beginning at Julian's on Feb first and nary Julian's shall I get to until I see daylight in the portrait— but I do feel better than when I last wrote— On Thursday I went to see Mr Julian himself at The Pasage and he [[left page]] to the conscience of a much loved sinner could have adjured him more solemnly than Julian did me to "cherchez la verité" — "Quand c'est suit au salon on dira" "C'est très distingué ça." "Oui, oui, c'est distingué". et on passe voila tout - Mais si à cela est ajouté la verité - on dira "Venez voir__! tout le monde cours - voila un nouveau nom! et demain la Gloire!" "Mais je crains pour vous - je crains pour vous". Pour vous un Table ce n'est pas un Table but something around which you throw your imagination and turn it into illusion— Then I showed him Miss Conant and the women's heads and my baby— "Ah oui" le plein air vous oblige à être vrai" He criticized Mrs Conant in one or two small points and then drew himself back and exclaimed [[to page 20]]
