I am feeling much better about the portrait now—  Mr Lasar came the other day while Louise was posing, and approved of it - leaned back in his chair and said "Thats nice, thats nice  which was a great deal from him - criticised the modeling of the face in one or two small places - but was encouraging.  I am painting the cloak now.  I am much surprised that Mlle Klumpke should have received the Temple Gold medal for that picture.  It must have been a pretty poor exhibition—  It was well hung in the Salon last year but Mr Figaro said about it that

the kindest thing that could be said about it was that it would have been better left undone—  It has the Commoness with out any of the pathos or Sentiment of labor—  It is forcibly painted and that is about all. but there is'nt even enough of that to make up for the rest—  I hav'nt seen Miss Klumpke yet this year— I sent her my card for Tuesdays, but she hasn't been yet - and as she is not far off I am not going to see her until she does—
I roared over your account of seeing "Hoeby" at the exhib. He dont look half as Common in his corduroy knickerbockers and tam and flannel shirt - as he does in his store clothes - we were
